{"id":188,"date":"2018-06-18T12:34:04","date_gmt":"2018-06-18T12:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/?p=188"},"modified":"2020-11-16T16:52:56","modified_gmt":"2020-11-16T16:52:56","slug":"cold-water-swimming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/?p=188","title":{"rendered":"Cold Water Swimming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back from Croatia on a hot sunny Saturday, regular sea swims are in Weymouth Bay on a Sunday morning at 9:30.&nbsp; I hardly joined them for one swim in 2017, and certainly none without a wet suit.<\/p>\n<p>How to prepare myself for the cold.&nbsp; Immediately after the London Marathon, just prior to going to the swim camp in Croatia, I started to eat, and eat and eat.&nbsp; My aim was to go from just under 9 stone to somewhere between 10 and 1\/2 to 11 stone by the time of my swim.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to popular belief the grease we wear is not to combat the cold, it just prevents salt sores.&nbsp; I needed to put on &#8216;fat&#8217; to keep me warm.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_199\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-199\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0142.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-199 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0142-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0142-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0142.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Typical &#8216;extras&#8217; to my usual shopping basket<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_200\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-200\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0138.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-200 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0138-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0138-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0138.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I often enjoyed a second breakfast of french bread, lashings of butter and apricot jam &#8211; something I only ever did when &#8216;carb loading&#8217; prior to an event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I also started to grow my hair (both it and I don&#8217;t like it long) in the belief that slightly longer hair under my hat will give me just a bit more insulation on my head.&nbsp; It is well known that you loose most of your heat through your head and I would only be allowed to wear one regular swim hat on the swim.<\/p>\n<p>For my initial swims back in the UK I intended to continue to wear the bright orange neoprene hat over my regular one, and don a &#8216;skin suit&#8217;, used by triathletes over their tri suits for non-wet suit swims,&nbsp; just to keep the wind off my back.<\/p>\n<p>In addition I&#8217;d always wear silicone mouldable earplugs, which prevent any cold water getting in the ear, plus, of course,&nbsp; apply Vaseline to stop salt rubs on my neck and under the edges of my swim suit on my shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>On my Channel swim, I will mix Vaseline with Lanoline, a thick gooey white mixture, and apply it on almost every bit of exposed skin.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_202\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-202\" style=\"width: 632px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0149-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-202 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0149-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"632\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0149-2.jpg 632w, http:\/\/www.lindaashmore.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0149-2-300x117.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vaseline (&amp; glove) Goggles (&amp; demister), ear plugs, silicone hat, neoprene hat, swim suit, skin suit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now&#8217;s the time to put my toe in and test the waters !<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back from Croatia on a hot sunny Saturday, regular sea swims are in Weymouth Bay on a Sunday morning at 9:30.&nbsp; I hardly joined them for one swim in 2017, and certainly none without a wet suit.
